Catalan Language

Catalan is a Romance language of the western branch. It has two fundamental dialectal varieties: Eastern and Western Catalan, which contain lexical, phonetic and grammatical differences. The Catalan language in the Valencian Country is also called Valencian by historical tradition. The linguistic domain extends over 68,000 km2 of four European states: Andorra, Spain (Catalonia, the Valencian Country, the Balearic Islands, the Western Fringe, in Aragon, and the Carxe, in Murcia), France (Catalonia of the North) and Italy (the city of Alghero on the island of Sardinia).

These territories have more than 13 million inhabitants – the majority in Spain – of which around 10 million speak Catalan.

Source Institut Ramon Llull,is the public institution responsible for promoting Catalan language and culture internationally. The Institut represents a cultural and linguistic community of more than 10 million people who participate actively in global events and conversations through performing arts, literature and knowledge exchange. The Institut is a consortium formed by the Government of Catalonia, the Government of the Balearic Islands, Barcelona City Council and Palma City Council.
